“Nova Scotia Celebrates Acadian Heritage”

Date:

In West Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia, National Acadian Day holds significance beyond mere festivities, according to Rébécca-Sarah Potvin. She emphasized its role in cultural preservation.

Potvin, the executive director of the historic site L’Acadie de Chezzetcook, highlighted the importance of sharing the community’s history during the 30th-anniversary celebrations. The event aimed to expand the narrative and showcase the experiences of the local people.

The commemoration drew a crowd, offering music, a barbecue, and demonstrations of Acadian customs like butter-making and clam shelling. Notable figures such as Canada’s Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller, Central Nova MP Sean Fraser, and Coun. David Hendsbee were present.

Cameron DeBaie, chair of L’Acadie Chezzetcook, mentioned that the anniversary signifies progress in preserving Acadian culture and the French language in Chezzetcook. He reflected on the generational shift towards cherishing heritage and language roots.

Shirley Doucette Lowe, a volunteer at the Acadian House Museum, highlighted the community’s renewed interest, especially among the youth, in reclaiming the lost language and culture. The revitalization efforts extend to the local French school, École des Beaux-Marais in Porters Lake, managed by Conseil scolaire acadien provincial.

Potvin noted the revival of French summer camps to encourage continuous French language practice among students. This initiative aims to reinforce linguistic skills and cultural connections. DeBaie recalled participating in a similar camp as a child and emphasized the importance of maintaining language heritage.

The ongoing celebrations not only mark a single day but also present year-round opportunities for Nova Scotians to delve into West Chezzetcook’s Acadian history and cultural richness.
