“Voice of Calgary Flames Radio, Peter Maher, Dies at 79”

Date:

The longtime voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher, passed away at the age of 79. Maher, who began as the team’s play-by-play commentator for radio broadcasts in 1980, called 33 consecutive Calgary Flames seasons. Known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s passion for his work shone through during the team’s Stanley Cup championship in 1989 and their finals appearance in 2004. He retired following the 2013-14 NHL season.

The Calgary Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s friends, family, and fans, acknowledging that his voice had become ingrained in the experience of being a Flames supporter. Maher’s impact extended beyond broadcasting, as he was a dedicated ambassador for the team and a beloved member of the community.

Born and raised in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before moving to Calgary to become the official voice of the Flames in 1980. Rob Kerr, who worked alongside Maher in the Saddledome press box, remembered Maher as a remarkable storyteller of the Flames’ history, emphasizing Maher’s commitment to authenticity and journalistic integrity in his broadcasting.

Throughout his illustrious career, Maher also announced six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, including Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.” Honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Maher’s legacy lives on through an annual award given to the Flames player who exemplifies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
