“Summerland, B.C., Evacuation Orders Partially Lifted”

Date:

Summerland, B.C., authorities have allowed more residents to return home as the evacuation order for the district has been partially lifted. The evacuation notice has been downgraded to an alert for an area east of Highway 97 and the Trout Creek neighborhood on the west side of the highway. Highway 97 in Summerland is now fully operational for all traffic.

In British Columbia, evacuation orders are gradually being lifted in areas of high concern, such as Clinton and Summerland. The smoke covering the southern part of the province is expected to persist until Sunday, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service. The unpredictable weather conditions may lead to more lightning-caused fires on Sunday.

Highway 97 near Cache Creek has reopened partially following the closure due to the Pear Lake wildfire. The re-entry process in Summerland has allowed more residents to return home, with around 1,200 properties now under evacuation alert.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes mentioned that over 800 properties had their evacuation orders downgraded on Sunday. Out of the initial 5,500 properties under evacuation, damage assessments have been completed, but the extent of property loss remains uncertain.

The reopening of Highway 97 in Summerland is subject to fire behavior and the needs of the B.C. Wildfire Service crew. The B.C. Wildfire Service is monitoring the weather pattern for potential lightning strikes that could increase the fire risk in southern British Columbia.

The firefighting efforts in B.C. have been bolstered by crews from New Brunswick and Quebec to combat the numerous fires across the province. Evacuation orders have been partially lifted in Clinton, allowing residents to return home, although challenges remain due to the impact of the wildfires.

The Pear Lake wildfire remains the largest in B.C. this year, covering a vast area. Highways affected by the wildfires, like Highway 97 and Highway 1, continue to have restrictions in place due to active fire areas. Local officials remain optimistic about allowing more residents to return home as they work to contain the wildfires.
