“Alberta Launches Algal Bloom Tracker for Public Awareness”

Date:

A team of researchers in Alberta is actively monitoring blue-green algae, and a newly launched website allows the public to stay informed about the situation. The Algal Bloom Tracker provides real-time updates on toxic algal blooms at six different lakes using satellite imagery and lake sampling. Rolf Vinebrooke, a key figure in the project, explains that the website is regularly updated with satellite images of the lakes, offering a comprehensive view of the blooms and areas to avoid.

Blue-green algae, scientifically known as cyanobacteria, can proliferate in nutrient-rich Alberta lakes during the summer months, posing health risks due to the potential production of harmful toxins. Vinebrooke emphasizes the dynamic nature of these blooms, which can appear or vanish rapidly. The satellite technology enables close monitoring, surpassing traditional sampling methods.

The Algal Bloom Tracker, currently covering six lakes, including Ethel Lake, Lac La Biche, Nakamun Lake, Pigeon Lake, Sylvan Lake, and Wabamun Lake, is designed to inform visitors about bloom occurrences. Plans are underway to expand the tracker to approximately 50 lakes in Alberta within the next three years.

Health advisories are issued by Alberta Health Services when high levels of blue-green algae are detected in lakes, with over 25 advisories currently in effect across the province. The Algal Bloom Tracker operates independently from official health advisories, providing valuable information for public awareness and decision-making regarding water activities.

The project aims not only to track algal blooms but also to understand their patterns and impacts. Recognizing the importance of monitoring harmful algal blooms for various stakeholders, the website seeks to enhance knowledge and proactive measures to mitigate adverse effects on recreation, tourism, real estate, and Indigenous communities.
