Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to fame has inspired her music, a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical headed to Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production promises to narrate Dolly’s life story authentically through her own words and the impactful songs that have shaped her experiences.
In a video announcement, the 80-year-old Parton assured viewers that the musical would be a genuine portrayal of her life. She emphasized that it delves into her roots, struggles, triumphs, and personal discoveries rather than just focusing on external glamor.
The musical will feature a mix of new compositions created specifically for the show and some of Parton’s iconic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off on December 7 in New York City, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027.
Parton expressed her excitement, describing the opportunity as a realization of her dreams, especially considering her long-standing career spanning nearly seven decades. With a repertoire of over 3,000 songs and over 100 million albums sold globally, Parton’s legacy includes inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical premiered in Nashville last summer at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, where it enjoyed a sold-out six-week run. Director Bartlett Sher noted the profound impact of Parton’s work on audiences, highlighting the joy and inspiration she has brought to countless fans over the years.
The show aims to present an unfiltered version of Parton’s life, going beyond the glitz and glamour associated with her public persona. Tickets for the Broadway production will be available to the public starting Friday, July 10.
