Nova Scotia Author Rachel Reid Saves Libraries with $300K Donation

Date:

Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has made a generous donation of $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library in response to the potential closure of five branches. Reid expressed her motivation in a recent interview with CBC News, emphasizing the importance of using success for positive impact.

To address the imminent closure, the library had initially allocated $80,000 from its reserve funds to keep the branches operational until September 30. However, additional funding was required to sustain the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Following Reid’s substantial contribution, the library confirmed that the five branches could now remain open until the specified fiscal year end. The donation, primarily designated for staffing expenses, was heralded as a significant milestone by library CEO Julia Merritt, who expressed gratitude for Reid’s investment in the community.

Reid, renowned for the popular “Heated Rivalry” series, emphasized the vital role libraries played in her journey to becoming a successful author. She underscored the essential nature of libraries as a cornerstone of communities and expressed hope that her donation would raise awareness about the critical need for sustainable public library funding.

Looking ahead, library officials stressed the necessity of evolving the funding model to ensure the long-term viability of Nova Scotia’s public libraries. The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage acknowledged Reid’s contribution and affirmed its commitment to collaborating with library boards and municipal partners for a sustainable operating framework.

In response to the donation, the department highlighted its ongoing support for public libraries, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in sustaining these vital institutions. Reid is set to participate in a special event celebrating libraries, reading, and community, underscoring her dedication to supporting these invaluable resources.
