A powerful tornado wreaked havoc on the village of Pomas in southern France, causing extensive damage to over 300 homes and leaving dozens of people injured. Fortunately, there have been no reports of missing individuals.
The Aude prefecture confirmed that as of Tuesday morning, around 1,400 households were still without electricity. The tornado was captured swirling above the village of Verzeille, located a few kilometers east of Pomas, as shown in a social media video verified by Reuters. Numerous homes in its path had their windows shattered.
Images from another social media video, also verified by Reuters, depict the tornado moving through Preixan, situated a few kilometers north of Pomas.
In the aftermath, residents are assessing the damage and beginning the cleanup process. A man is seen amidst the debris of a damaged house in Pomas. The Saint Julien et Sainte Basilisse church suffered a collapsed roof, with debris scattered inside. Fallen trees in a cemetery and men covering a damaged building’s roof with a tarp in Pomas illustrate the extent of the destruction. Additionally, pedestrians navigate past a fallen tree near the damaged homes in the area.
The community is now focusing on recovery efforts to restore normalcy after this devastating natural disaster.
