“Canadian Consumers Rally Behind Local Goods Amid U.S. Tariffs”

Date:

Since the initiation of tariffs on Canadian goods by the U.S. in early 2025, Francine Piché from Burlington, Ont., has been consciously avoiding purchasing American products. In her household, the priority is Canadian-made items, followed by non-U.S. alternatives, with a strict no-American policy whenever possible.

Piché has taken active steps to switch to Canadian brands for personal care products, terminated her Amazon membership, and scrapped plans for a trip to New York to avoid supporting American businesses. However, with the recent implementation of new 50 percent U.S. tariffs following failed trade negotiations, Piché has decided not to make any exceptions moving forward.

In response to the escalating trade tensions, her family intends to discontinue their American streaming service subscriptions when due for renewal. Additionally, Piché is prepared to bid farewell to some of her favorite gluten-free foods sourced from the U.S., despite struggling to find Canadian alternatives.

Expressing her unwavering commitment, Piché emphasized, “My resolve is strengthened. That’s the only way that I can fight back.”

Following a resurgence in the Buy Canadian movement fueled by renewed trade threats, consumers are increasingly showing support for Canadian products. This trend has led to a significant surge in traffic for platforms promoting Canadian-made goods, including the Made in Canada Facebook group, which has witnessed a threefold increase in views compared to earlier months.

Administrator Jayne Little noted a heightened level of engagement within the group, with conversations now delving into detailed considerations of purchasing habits and exploring Canadian substitutes for various products. The group members are actively discussing revisiting their subscriptions and usage of American-owned platforms.

Similarly, other platforms and apps highlighting Canadian products have experienced a spike in traffic. For instance, the O SCANada app developed by Ryan Checora to provide information on product origins has seen a substantial increase in downloads recently.

While some consumers remain price-conscious when shopping, many have shown a preference for supporting Canadian brands amid the ongoing trade tensions. Businesses like Peace by Chocolate from Antigonish, N.S., have observed increased support, with a surge in web traffic and interest from consumers looking to back local enterprises.

Founder Tareq Hadhad highlighted the importance of consumer support for Canadian businesses during these challenging times. Despite uncertainties surrounding tariffs, Hadhad has ceased shipments to the U.S. and emphasized the significance of rallying behind domestic products.

The Buy Canadian movement has gained momentum, with consumers recognizing the impact of their choices on the economy. As trade tensions persist, Canadians are increasingly rallying behind local businesses, showcasing their solidarity and commitment to supporting the nation’s economy and values.
