Mother Identifies Daughter by Necklace in Tragic Migration Story

Date:

Jamila Afelom recounted how she identified her daughter, Fatin Ben Homar Azizi’s body solely by a necklace she had given her before she departed. Fatin’s lifeless body was discovered in a hospital a day and a half after she attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Afelom, speaking from Tétouan, Morocco, emotionally recalled the tragic events of late July, mentioning that acquaintances had witnessed Fatin’s body being retrieved from the sea, leaving an indelible impact on her.

Describing her daughter as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom reminisced about Fatin’s passion for soccer. Coach Adel El Kaab, who trained Fatin for years, fondly remembered her, underscoring how football served as a refuge for many girls facing challenging economic circumstances.

Despite El Kaab’s efforts to caution his players about the perils of irregular migration routes, several of them, including Fatin, embarked on the journey to Europe in pursuit of better opportunities. Tragically, Fatin’s aspirations were cut short as she lost her life during the perilous crossing.

Afelom, a single mother working at a cemetery, shared the heart-wrenching struggles her family faced due to economic hardships and lack of support. Fatin, driven by a desire to uplift her family from poverty, made the heartbreaking decision to pursue a new life in Europe, ultimately leading to her untimely demise.

The tragic incident is part of a larger trend of migrants attempting dangerous crossings, with many losing their lives in pursuit of a better future. Fatin’s story highlights the harsh realities faced by many young Moroccans seeking refuge from challenging circumstances in their homeland.

As Fatin’s family grapples with their loss, they continue to search for answers and closure, underscoring the urgent need for better support and solutions to prevent further tragedies among vulnerable migrants.
