This week’s focus is on the challenges posed by the increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) on our roads. With Canada aiming for 75% EV sales by 2035 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the need for trained technicians to maintain and repair EVs is crucial.
A recent report by Pollution Probe highlighted significant gaps in training for technicians to service electric school buses, emphasizing the necessity for skills in high-voltage safety, battery diagnostics, and charging infrastructure management. The evolving technology of EVs demands specialized training not typically covered in standard automotive programs.
Currently, manufacturers primarily handle EV technician training, but there is a growing need for broader industry support to accommodate the rising number of EVs on the road. The lack of standardization among manufacturers and proprietary technology further complicates the training landscape, limiting access to essential information for technicians.
To address these challenges, independent auto shops and educational institutions like Vancouver Community College and Centennial College are expanding their clean energy programs to equip technicians with the necessary skills for EV maintenance. Efforts such as NAPA’s Next Drive program and the establishment of a new Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation at VCC are steps towards bridging the skills gap in EV servicing.
Despite obstacles, the industry is adapting to meet the demand for EV technicians, emphasizing the importance of integrating EV content into trade curricula and providing ongoing training opportunities. As the automotive sector transitions towards cleaner energy solutions, investing in training and upskilling technicians is essential for a sustainable future.
