During the inaugural Fat Marmot Week hosted by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, the competition included a public vote and a weigh-in to determine which marmot gained the most weight before hibernation.
The champion, named Dawn, clinched victory in both categories. Dawn, known for fathering numerous marmot offspring and indulging in salt and mineral-rich rocks, impressively doubled his body weight from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms over the summer.
Organizer Katie Adler expressed her admiration for Dawn, describing him as a unique marmot with a fondness for rock consumption. However, with the title of the heaviest marmot, Dawn also assumed the unofficial role of ambassador for the Marmot Project, a vital long-term research initiative facing uncertainty due to funding cuts in the U.S.
Inspired by the success of Fat Bear Week at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, Fat Marmot Week sheds light on the hibernation preparation of marmots in Gothic. The yellow-bellied marmots, including Dawn, are gearing up to endure an eight-week winter slumber by accumulating substantial weight to survive the cold.
The Marmot Project, established in 1962 as a pioneering study of yellow-bellied marmots, faces challenges due to recent funding reductions impacting research organizations in the U.S. The project’s leaders are concerned about the future of their research amid these financial constraints and the broader erosion of support for higher education.
To raise awareness and secure funding, the Marmot Project launched creative campaigns such as OnlyMarms on the platform OnlyFans, offering subscribers a glimpse into the lives of marmots through camera traps. Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges the limitations of such fundraising methods for sustained research.
In a bid to reverse the funding cuts and safeguard the future of scientific research, the Marmot Project initiated a petition urging Congress to reconsider its budget allocations.
