Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting on whether to authorize a strike, citing a standstill in bargaining discussions, according to their union. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, is seeking a strike mandate after months of negotiations with Jazz Aviation have failed to resolve critical issues. The union emphasized the importance of a strong strike mandate to convey the seriousness of the outstanding matters and the determination of its members.
In response, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation expressed the company’s commitment to reaching a resolution at the bargaining table without disrupting its operations. With negotiations at an impasse, the company is pursuing the appointment of a conciliation officer. Jazz Aviation, which is not owned by Air Canada but by Chorus, serves as the primary operator for Air Canada Express flights.
One of the key issues highlighted by the union is pay disparity compared to flight attendants at other Canadian airlines. While some progress has been made on certain fronts, significant concerns such as wages, ground work compensation, and overall job impact recognition remain unresolved. The union stresses the need for an agreement that properly acknowledges the role and responsibilities of Jazz flight attendants, particularly in light of recent industry agreements.
