“Rescue Operations Continue Along Nepal-China Border”

Date:

Rescue operations with search canines are ongoing along the Nepal-China border to find numerous individuals still unaccounted for after devastating floods ravaged the Himalayan region, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities. In Nepal, authorities have confirmed 1,003 deaths and 3,916 missing persons, including 583 foreign nationals. Meanwhile, China reported 16 deaths and 546 missing persons, including 261 foreigners.

The extensive damage caused by the disaster on August 26 has made rescue operations challenging due to landslides, destroyed infrastructure, and difficult access to remote areas. Efforts are focused on locating approximately 900 workers, with around 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels at hydropower projects in Nepal.

Teams, supported by international experts, are diligently working at the damaged sites to rescue individuals. Similarly, Chinese rescue teams are actively searching for survivors in areas affected by mudslides, particularly around the Gyirong Port border crossing.

In Kathmandu, authorities are burying bodies in temporary graves, preserving DNA samples and other identifying details to facilitate future identification processes. Relief operations have been expanded to reach stranded communities, with over 11,800 people rescued thus far. Emergency aid is being provided, and reconstruction efforts are being planned.

The disaster, triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, led to catastrophic floods downstream. The resulting devastation underscores the urgent need to address climate change impacts in the region, according to Nepal’s Prime Minister. Efforts are ongoing to provide support to those affected, with international assistance being mobilized to aid in rescue and relief operations.
