The Toronto Tempo, a prominent WNBA team, unveiled their long-awaited mascots during a recent game, but the reception from fans has been mixed. Dez, the snapping turtle, and Dot, the Arctic hare, symbolize contrasting tempos inspired by Aesop’s fable of their race. Despite their dissimilarities, they both proudly represent Canada’s sole WNBA franchise.
Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is depicted as composed, enjoying music, soft-shell tacos, and identified as a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, nicknamed after Toronto’s T-Dot, brings energy, favoring cotton candy, the Netflix series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their serendipitous meeting led them to realize their perfect synergy.
According to the Tempo’s news release, Dez and Dot bonded over their shared passion for rhythm, albeit with different approaches. Eventually, the vibrant beat of Toronto drew them to the bustling city. However, the reception from their hometown has been lukewarm, with some critiquing their design and likening them unfavorably to the Toronto Raptors’ mascot.
Despite the criticism, Whitney Bell, the Tempo’s chief marketing officer, emphasized the mascots’ Canadian roots in their identity. Some online critics argue that the mascots do not adequately reflect Canadian or Torontonian culture, suggesting a beaver or raccoon would have been more fitting choices.
While some fans have shown support for Dez and Dot, others have speculated on their relationship status and sexuality. Reportedly, the mascots are neither siblings nor in a romantic relationship but are best friends, as confirmed by TSN Toronto Tempo beat reporter Chelsea Leite.
The Toronto Tempo’s inaugural season has been challenging, with a current record of 10–25 and a 12-game losing streak. Their recent loss to the Washington Mystics has officially eliminated them from playoff contention.
