Israeli airstrikes in a southern Lebanese town resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, including two children, in the early hours of Monday, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. This incident marked one of the deadliest days of Israeli bombardment in recent weeks, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of Israeli military actions in Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreed upon in June to end hostilities between the Israeli military and Hezbollah.
According to a woman claiming to be related to three of the deceased, one of the attacks targeted a residential building where children were preparing for school. The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at individuals observed transferring weapons in the vicinity of the town Kfar Rumman.
Reporters from Reuters witnessed children’s schoolbooks scattered amidst the rubble of the demolished building at the scene. Rescue teams, aided by heavy machinery, worked diligently to retrieve bodies trapped under the debris throughout the morning.
In a tragic turn of events, eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat lost his mother and grandparents in the attack, with his father still missing as search efforts continued. Meanwhile, Mustafa received medical care for his injuries in the hospital. His relative, Mona Farhat, expressed disbelief and questioned the purpose behind the attack, emphasizing their determination to remain on their land.
The Health Ministry of Lebanon confirmed that 11 individuals, including two children and four women, lost their lives in the assault on the residential structure. Additionally, the ministry reported that a separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the town claimed the life of one medic and left two others injured.
The airstrikes on the town occurred without prior online evacuation warnings from the Israeli military. Despite asserting efforts to minimize harm to non-combatants through the use of precise weaponry and aerial surveillance, the military stated its intention to review reports of civilian casualties resulting from the strikes.
Israel attributed its actions to Hezbollah’s launch of two explosive drones towards Israeli troops near the Ali al-Taher ridge, where Hezbollah is believed to have established an underground military installation. Israeli forces had recently cleared Hezbollah fighters from the ridge, leading to increased strikes on surrounding areas where residents had returned post-ceasefire.
Lebanese security officials anticipated ongoing escalations in southern regions in the upcoming weeks, following the intensified hostilities. The recent surge in violence comes after a period of reduced conflict following the ceasefire agreement, with Israeli forces maintaining operations within the designated security zone and neighboring areas without evacuation alerts.
