Samantha Knight, an ecologist at Fort Needham Memorial Park in north-end Halifax, described multiflora roses as a major obstacle to maintaining Nova Scotia’s forest structure. David Steele and a volunteer group in the Wolfville and Kentville area have been actively removing multiflora roses. Steele referred to the plant as “vicious,” noting its origins from Asia as rootstock for breeding ornamental roses and its subsequent agricultural use for cattle fencing due to its dense and thorny nature.
The spread of multiflora roses is facilitated by seed dispersal through birds and soil disturbance from construction activities. Despite their preference for open and sunny areas, these resilient plants have even been found growing in streams.
Steele’s volunteer group utilizes various methods, including manual removal and specialized tools, to eradicate multiflora roses. Knight emphasized the importance of managing invasive species to preserve resilient ecosystems, stressing the need to address the impact of non-native plants on local biodiversity.
