Two men sustained injuries during a disturbance at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple in Edmonton on Friday morning. The incident involved a man armed with a screwdriver interrupting morning prayers at the Sikh temple. A 27-year-old suspect is currently in custody following the stabbing at the expansive temple located on the city’s outskirts. The altercation occurred around 5 a.m. in Edmonton’s northeast area.
The motive behind the stabbing remains unknown as police are conducting an investigation with the EPS Hate Crimes unit involved. Reports indicate that prior to the stabbing, authorities received a call regarding a man walking in traffic. The suspect, aged 27, entered the temple and tried to access the prayer room before attacking two individuals.
Prompt action by witnesses led to the apprehension of the suspect before the police arrived. The victims, aged 75 and 51, were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the suspect. Charges are pending against the suspect, who has a history of violence and was recently released from a federal institution.
The temple’s vice president, Zora Grewal, mentioned that the victims included a temple priest and a long-serving volunteer. The suspect purportedly stabbed the priest with a screwdriver before targeting the elderly volunteer. Although initial reports suggested damage to a Sikh scripture, temple officials confirmed that no sacred texts were harmed in the incident.
Grewal expressed shock at the suspect’s recent release and highlighted the need for stricter controls on potentially dangerous offenders. Both victims are expected to recover, and discussions will be held to decide on additional security measures at the temple.
In response to the incident, the World Sikh Organization of Canada urged Sikh communities to enhance security measures and stay vigilant. The Gurdwara, constructed nearly three decades ago, temporarily closed to the public for the ongoing police investigation.
The stabbing occurred shortly after two Sikh temples in Alberta received threatening phone calls. Authorities are collaborating closely with the affected temples and reassured that there is no immediate threat to the community. Public figures, including Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the violence and offered support to the affected community. Opposition leader Naheed Nenshi expressed shock at the incident and emphasized the importance of thorough investigations into potential hate crimes.
