The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of certain products under the Whole Foods Market brand due to their connection to a salmonella outbreak in the United States. The recalled items include various guacamoles, pico de gallos, salsas, and prepared foods that were distributed in Ontario stores and online. Although there have been no reported illnesses in Canada linked to these products, the CFIA advises individuals who suspect they may have fallen ill from consuming a recalled item to seek medical advice.
The recall is linked to an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding salmonella cases associated with jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. In the U.S., over 300 people have reported falling ill, with 36 hospitalizations but no fatalities. The Public Health Agency of Canada stated that they are not currently investigating any salmonella cases related to the U.S. outbreak.
Salmonella is a harmful bacteria causing salmonellosis, an infection of the intestinal tract. The CFIA warns that contaminated food may not show signs of spoilage but can still result in illness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. While healthy individuals may recover within a week, vulnerable populations like children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe infections. Symptoms typically appear within six hours to six days after exposure and can last for four to seven days.
