President Trump announced on Tuesday that he and a group of artificial intelligence company leaders have signed a voluntary agreement for internal and external reviews of the technology. Trump praised the industry’s self-policing efforts, emphasizing the importance of self-regulation.
The agreement followed a meeting between Trump and top tech executives who are investing heavily in AI infrastructure. The executives have faced opposition from communities regarding the development of AI, prompting calls for a slowdown in technology advancement due to concerns about rogue AI agents.
Despite these concerns, Trump assured that the U.S. government would not restrict AI development or impose guardrails. He expressed optimism about the technology’s potential, comparing it to the Industrial Revolution.
Key AI executives present at the White House meeting included Dario Amodei, Greg Brockman, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk. Trump highlighted the importance of AI leadership, contrasting with some executives’ calls for caution in AI development.
Vice-President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other officials also attended the meeting. The unveiling of an AI chatbot, America.gov, aimed at simplifying access to government services, was a significant part of the event.
Trump emphasized the need for self-regulation in the AI industry and suggested addressing community concerns about data centers by supporting local schools or lowering energy costs. He warned that opposition to data centers could lead to companies moving operations overseas.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stressed the company’s focus on safety, including pausing the rollout of new models to ensure confidence in safety measures. Trump’s stance on AI competition with China remained strong, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to maintain a leading position in AI development.
