Christa Pike is currently in an unconscious state, intubated, and is being assisted with breathing by a ventilator following Tennessee’s unsuccessful attempt to carry out her execution, as per her legal representatives on Friday. This marks the first detailed report on the extent of injuries she sustained during the failed lethal injection. Medical staff are actively working to save Pike’s life and eliminate the lethal drug pentobarbital from her system, according to an emergency court filing by her attorneys. Pike remains in critical condition, enduring significant arm injuries, even two days after the state administered two doses of pentobarbital but failed to achieve the intended outcome.
In a recent filing in the Chancery Court for the State of Tennessee Twentieth Judicial District, Pike’s lawyers highlighted that none of the execution team members were aware that the IV lines were improperly placed or that the pentobarbital was entering Pike’s body due to blown veins. This document provides the most comprehensive overview yet of the medical repercussions of the botched execution, which Governor Bill Lee stated had followed the state’s established protocol. This incident marks the state’s second flawed execution this year. Consequently, Governor Lee has suspended all further state executions for the remainder of 2026 and has initiated an independent review to investigate the events surrounding the failed execution.
Christa Pike, who was convicted of the 1995 murder of her 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer when Pike was 18, had been slated to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries. Pike’s legal team had previously warned the state and courts about issues related to intravenous access that ultimately led to the challenges faced by the execution team in administering the lethal drug.
