The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. With a career spanning over four decades and more than 4,000 games called, Martinez has been a significant figure within the organization as a player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude on CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning,” Martinez acknowledged the honor bestowed upon him and credited the Jays fans for their unwavering support throughout the years. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez shared that his signature lines evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, influenced by his time in Milwaukee and the great Bob Uecker.
Reflecting on his transition to retirement, Martinez admitted that it has been a significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations as a broadcaster, Martinez had to step back due to health concerns, having battled cancer for the second time in 2025. He happily announced that he is now cancer-free and in good health.
The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who have shaped the franchise, including current members of the team’s Level of Excellence like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.
Martinez, who initially felt “exiled” when he joined the Blue Jays in 1981, later came to appreciate the city’s passion for baseball and the team’s strong fan base. Recalling last year’s World Series as one of the best he has seen, Martinez highlighted the team’s chemistry and the thrilling Game 7 as standout moments.
Despite witnessing challenges faced by players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. during a tough season, Martinez emphasized the game’s inherent difficulties, even for the most talented athletes.
