“Optogenetics Pioneers Awarded Nobel Prize”

Date:

Three scientists, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, were awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, announced by the Nobel Assembly in Stockholm on Monday. Optogenetics, a technique enabling the control of individual nerve cells’ activity in a living brain, has become a widely utilized method in neuroscience research worldwide, unraveling the complexities of the brain.

The recipients, Deisseroth from the United States, Hegemann, and Nagel from Germany, expressed their surprise and gratitude for the prestigious award, emphasizing their appreciation for being recognized alongside their esteemed colleagues. The Nobel Prize, amounting to 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.7 million Cdn), will be divided among the three scientists. Deisseroth is affiliated with Stanford University, Hegemann with Humboldt University, and Nagel with the University of Wurzburg in Germany.

One notable application of optogenetics is in restoring vision for individuals affected by retinitis pigmentosa by introducing light-sensitive proteins into the retina. Furthermore, researchers anticipate advancements in cochlear implants through optogenetics, aiming for more precise stimulation of the auditory nerve compared to current electrical devices.

The journey to this achievement began in the early 1990s when Hegemann explored the light response of the alga Chlamydomonas, leading to the discovery of channelrhodopsin-2, an ion channel activated by light. Deisseroth’s work in 2005 demonstrated the implementation of optogenetics in nerve cells, marking a significant milestone in utilizing light for controlling cell activity.

The Nobel Prizes for chemistry and physics are set to be announced in the coming days, followed by literature and peace prizes. The awards, instituted by Alfred Nobel, aim to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions benefiting humanity. Nobel, known for inventing dynamite, established the prizes in his will, with the first awards presented five years after his passing in 1896.

The laureates will receive their Nobel Prizes on December 10, commemorating the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
