Political figures in Canada are strongly opposing a directive issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to rebrand Lake Ontario as Lake America, asserting that the decision is offensive and not accepted beyond the Canadian border.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized in a social media post on Thursday that the name of Lake Ontario remains unchanged and will continue to be recognized as such by Canadians and globally.
Similarly, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles reaffirmed the lake’s original name, stating definitively in a video shared on social media that it will always be referred to as Lake Ontario.
President Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, has sparked controversy. The province of Ontario, established in 1867, drew its name from this prominent body of water.
During a public appearance, Trump defended the name change by labeling Canada as “entitled” and accused the country of unfair practices towards the United States.
Expressing strong opposition to the directive, the Wendat Nation criticized the executive order as an attempt to erase their historical significance. Grand Chief Pierre Picard publicly denounced the decision, emphasizing the importance of the name Ontario to their culture and identity.
Picard highlighted the cultural significance of the name Ontario, which stems from the Wendat word Ontarïio’, meaning ‘the lake is beautiful, great.’
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, representing the largest city on Lake Ontario’s shores, dismissed the renaming as illegitimate and asserted that Trump’s actions would not weaken the resolve of Canadians.
Additionally, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the historical significance of the name Lake Ontario, dating back over 400 years, and affirmed that the name shall remain unchanged, reflecting the enduring nature of the lake’s identity.
Trump’s swift renaming of the lake, effective immediately as per his order, draws parallels to his previous decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
