“Competition Heats Up as Ambassador Bridge Courts Trucking Firms”

Date:

In recent times, concerns have arisen regarding the anticipated launch of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, prompting actions from the Ambassador Bridge representatives to actively engage trucking companies in an effort to maintain their business, as per a statement from an industry spokesperson.

According to Lak Shoan, the Ontario Trucking Association’s policy director, they began receiving reports from a few members about the Ambassador Bridge’s activities in the spring. It came up in conversations where companies mentioned that the Ambassador Bridge was reaching out to more firms, indicating a proactive approach to retain clients.

Several Canadian trucking companies with cross-border operations were contacted by CBC Windsor to inquire if the Ambassador Bridge had made any offers regarding toll rates. Some declined to discuss private business agreements, while others did not respond to the queries.

A deleted post from a U.S. trucking union official in late July advised against using the newly established publicly-owned crossing due to an existing contract with the Ambassador Bridge, which was saving them $240,000 monthly in toll fees.

Toll rates and revenue played a significant role in the lengthy political process to open the $6.4 billion Gordie Howe bridge, fully funded by the Canadian government. The agreement for the bridge’s opening includes a clause allowing the U.S. government to prevent the new bridge from reducing toll rates below those of comparable regional crossings.

The Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge since 1979, intensified their political influence efforts leading up to U.S. President Donald Trump’s sudden threats to hinder the new crossing’s opening. Despite the eventual opening of the bridge on July 27, it followed the cancellation of a planned June opening at the U.S. government’s request, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Allegations have been made against Trump for attempting to block the opening of the new bridge to favor the Morouns. The Ambassador Bridge representatives did not provide responses before publication, but their website indicated the availability of a cost-effective toll program for select trucking companies.

Shoan emphasized the trucking association’s support for healthy competition between bridges, believing it could lead to reduced toll expenses for trucking firms. Details shared by Barrett in a Facebook post shed light on the financial terms of the contract between FCA Transport and the Ambassador Bridge.

Barrett stated that under their current contract, they pay a fixed monthly rate of $160,000, a significant reduction from the previous per-crossing fee structure that cost them over $400,000 monthly.

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge was viewed as a positive development by Stellantis, a global automaker, which highlighted the importance of seamless logistics for their operations in both countries.

Shoan highlighted the appeal of deals offered by the Ambassador Bridge to trucking firms amidst uncertainty surrounding the Gordie Howe bridge’s opening, emphasizing the desire for cost certainty in today’s unsettled economic climate.
