The Minnesota Frost secured team captain Kendall Coyne Schofield with a new two-year deal on Monday, dispelling any speculations about the 34-year-old taking a break following her recent Olympic gold medal win with the United States. This move ensures continuity for the Frost as they head into their fourth season with a stable leadership core that has been pivotal since clinching back-to-back Walter Cup titles in 2024 and ’25. Alongside alternate captains Lee Stecklein and Kelly Pannek, Coyne Schofield expressed excitement about the upcoming seasons and her commitment to reclaiming the Walter Cup for Minnesota.
Hailing from Chicago, Coyne Schofield boasts an impressive resume as a four-time Olympian and two-time gold medalist. She played a significant role in the formation of the PWHL back in 2023. Despite missing some games due to an upper-body injury sustained during the Milan-Cortina Games, Coyne Schofield delivered a strong performance last season, tallying 12 goals and 23 points in 23 games. Her career stats of 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists) in 77 PWHL games rank her third in the league’s records.
Initially part of the Frost’s foundational player signings, Coyne Schofield’s future with the team was uncertain as she remained unsigned, leaving her exposed during the PWHL’s expansion process in June. With this new contract, the Frost now have 17 players on board, including eight key members from their championship-winning squads. Despite finishing third in the previous season’s standings, the Frost faced a tough defeat in a crucial Game 5 of the semifinals against eventual champions Montreal.
