Lu Dort had an outstanding debut in Quebec City, scoring 25 points, while his teammate, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, contributed 26 points as Canada secured a remarkable 97-92 win over Argentina in the FIBA men’s basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifier on Monday night. The game drew over 13,000 spectators at the Videotron Centre.
Canada, ranked fifth globally by FIBA, maintained their undefeated streak in eight games and is set to face Uruguay in their next match on November 26, followed by a rematch against Argentina three days later. The top three teams from the remaining America groups will qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar, with the best fourth-placed team also earning a spot in Doha.
Despite Argentina’s Nicolas Laprovittola’s stellar performance with 31 points, Canada’s defensive efforts limited the rest of the Argentine team, with Nicolas Brussino being the only other player to reach double digits with 11 points.
Lu Dort made an impactful start by scoring a three-pointer as Canada took an early 13-6 lead in the first quarter before Argentina mounted a comeback, outscoring Canada 13-1 in just over two minutes. Argentina, ranked eighth, led 29-23 after the first quarter.
Argentina extended their lead to 17 points early in the second quarter, capitalizing on Dort’s absence due to foul trouble. However, Canada fought back and reduced the deficit to 53-48 by halftime, with head coach Gordie Herbert emphasizing the importance of cutting the lead before the break.
The Canadian team emerged more aggressive in the third quarter, outscoring Argentina 25-16, with veteran Kelly Olynyk playing a crucial role under the basket. In the final quarter, Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s leadership propelled Canada to victory.
After a rusty start following his NBA playoffs appearance, Dort regained his form as the game progressed, expressing his readiness and fitness post-game to reporters.
