“Protesters Rally Against Nationalist Group in Hamilton”

Date:

Over 100 individuals gathered outside Hamilton city hall on Saturday to protest against a self-proclaimed nationalist group planning to hold a day-long conference in the city. The Hope Not Hate rally aimed to combat racism and bigotry in response to the Dominion Society’s event organization.

The anti-immigration group, initially scheduled to host their DomCon event in Hamilton, relocated it to Burlington, Ontario. Despite this, several individuals associated with the Dominion Society were spotted in the parking lot of The Atrium Banquet and Conference Centre in Burlington, where the event took place. Protesters outside the venue expressed their opposition to what they deemed as fascist and racist ideologies.

The Atrium management clarified that they were unaware of the Dominion Society’s background when accepting the reservation, emphasizing their respect for all citizens’ rights, including the right to protest. Efforts by various groups in Hamilton successfully raised awareness about the Dominion Society, leading to the cancellation of bookings at two Hamilton venues.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath and other local groups had urged businesses and institutions to reconsider hosting events by the Dominion Society. Residents gathered at Hamilton city hall to demonstrate unity against the group, emphasizing the importance of standing up against white supremacy and racist politics infiltrating their community.

The Dominion Society, known for promoting Canadian nationalism and immigration reform, faced criticism for their controversial views on mass deportations and the so-called “great replacement” conspiracy theory. Despite facing backlash, the group proceeded with their conference, featuring speakers like Martin Sellner, a far-right Austrian extremist.

Local authorities, including Hamilton police, collaborated with community groups in denouncing the Dominion Society and urging venues to consider the impact of hosting such events. Leaders and organizations reiterated their commitment to inclusivity and condemned hate-based ideologies that seek to divide communities.

The Dominion Society’s attempt to hold their event in various locations faced opposition from citizens and officials alike, reflecting a collective stance against intolerance and discrimination in Canadian communities.
