Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest attack since a fragile ceasefire agreement was reached in June to stop the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, although hostilities have persisted.
Apart from the aerial assaults and drone strikes, local residents and emergency responders have accused Israeli forces of purposely initiating wildfires that have been ravaging homes, forests, and olive groves in the troubled region.
The ongoing situation has instilled fear among the population about their safety and the possibility of returning for those hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict.
Will Christou, a journalist with The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been closely monitoring and reporting on the wildfires and the broader Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon.
Correction: An earlier version of this episode incorrectly stated that a memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2026 involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In reality, Israel was not part of that agreement. This error has been rectified.
