Renowned drummer Frank Beard, known for his rhythmic contributions to ZZ Top’s chart-topping hits such as “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard, who was receiving hospice care, died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones.

In a statement, ZZ Top’s guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, expressed his grief over the loss of Beard, highlighting his innovative drumming skills and deep connection to Texas. Gibbons emphasized that ZZ Top will continue in honor of Beard’s legacy and wishes.

Throughout their career, ZZ Top achieved significant success, selling over 50 million records and securing six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. The band received multiple Grammy Award nominations, with seven of their albums reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Formed in 1969, ZZ Top originated from Texas, with Beard, Gibbons, and bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill coming together to create a distinctive sound influenced by blues and British rock. Their iconic appearance, featuring long beards and sunglasses, became synonymous with their music style.

ZZ Top’s music, characterized by witty lyrics, gained popularity in Hollywood and was featured in various films. Their unique blend of rock, blues, and funk was described as a “steaming-hot Houston stew,” setting them apart in the music industry.

Over the years, ZZ Top’s lineup remained consistent, with hits like “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Cheap Sunglasses” solidifying their place in rock history. The band’s evolution, especially with the release of “Eliminator” in 1983, showcased their versatility by incorporating new elements into their music while maintaining their signature style.

The band’s distinctive bearded look was a result of a fortuitous decision during a break in their career, with Gibbons recalling the humorous origins of their iconic appearance. Their image resonated with fans and was a key component of their visual identity, especially during the rise of MTV.

Despite facing challenges and lineup changes over the years, ZZ Top’s enduring legacy in the music industry remains a testament to their talent and dedication. Frank Beard’s contributions to the band will always be remembered, and his impact on ZZ Top’s music will continue to resonate with fans worldwide.
