A man in Halifax reported being subjected to a racist incident on a Saturday afternoon when another individual struck his car with bagpipes and hurled racist remarks at him. Shalu Shajan, an immigrant from India, recounted the event that took place on Lower Water Street in downtown Halifax. According to Shajan, the man carrying bagpipes approached his parked car and deliberately hit the side mirror with part of the instrument. Subsequently, the man struck the trunk of the car as well after being confronted by Shajan. The situation escalated into a verbal altercation during which the man directed racist language at Shajan, telling him to “go back to your country.”
Eyewitness Raven Fox observed the confrontation while walking up Prince Street with his girlfriend. Fox described a heated exchange between the two men, noting that the aggressor made racially biased comments, including questioning Shajan’s permanent resident status in Canada. The man with the bagpipes seemed to intentionally target Shajan’s car, Fox added, expressing disappointment at the incident occurring in a supposedly welcoming community.
Shajan expressed concern about the escalating aggression and racial slurs directed at him, fearing a physical altercation might ensue. When he attempted to call 911, the man walked away towards the waterfront. Subsequently, Shajan took a photo of the man and reported the incident to Halifax Regional Police, including their hate crime unit. The police verified receiving the report and were investigating whether the incident constituted a hate crime. Shajan confirmed to the police that he believed the racist language used by the man was motivated by hate, prompting the police to inquire if he wanted to press charges, to which Shajan responded affirmatively.
In a separate but related context, reported hate crimes targeting South Asian Canadians have shown a steady increase in recent years, according to Statistics Canada data. The Indo-Canadian Association of Nova Scotia expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the broader impact of hate incidents on affected individuals and communities. Shajan, while having faced racist comments in the past, stated that this incident marked the first time he felt physically threatened. He decided to share his experience on Facebook to aid the police investigation and ensure accountability for the perpetrator.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing racism and hate crimes within communities, with stakeholders highlighting the need for continued efforts to combat such behavior.
