Alleged stalker Julia Wandelt, who asserted to be Madeleine McCann, expressed regret for receiving approximately £400 from people as she is “ashamed” of the situation. She acknowledged the potential misperception of accepting money.
Court proceedings revealed that Wandelt traveled to the US, specifically Orange County in California, to undergo a DNA test. During her visit, she stayed with Dr. Fia Johansson, who initially showed interest in supporting Wandelt’s claims of being Madeleine McCann. However, the situation shifted when Johansson proposed the idea of a documentary.
Subsequently, Wandelt appeared on the US television show Dr. Phil before returning to Europe. Her barrister, Tom Price KC, inquired about her communication with Kate McCann, Madeleine’s mother, and the reasons behind reaching out to her.
The court also delved into Wandelt’s interactions with Karen Spragg, her co-accused in the stalking charge involving the McCann family. Wandelt mentioned conversing with Spragg on various topics before traveling to the UK, including discussions about “my cats.”
Additionally, Wandelt mentioned contacting Mr. Payne regarding a toy, Cuddle Cat, similar to a childhood teddy bear she owned. She perceived discrepancies in her mother’s account of the toy’s origin, holding onto it as potential evidence amid identity doubts.
Wandelt revealed receiving holiday photos of the McCann family from an individual associated with Russell O’Brien, present during Madeleine’s disappearance in 2007. Wandelt assured the court she never intended to publish the photos.
Regarding messages sent to Amelie, Madeleine’s sister, Wandelt clarified she sought assistance in uncovering her true identity, including pursuing a DNA test with Kate and Gerry McCann. She emphasized her genuine efforts to ascertain her identity, refuting claims of manipulation.
Both Wandelt and Spragg deny the stalking allegations, with Wandelt maintaining she never intended to cause distress by contacting Amelie.
