The BBC has issued an apology to former President Donald Trump regarding the editing of his speech preceding the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol building.
The editing error took place in a 2024 Panorama episode, and the BBC acknowledged it as a lapse in judgment. A spokesperson for the BBC stated that the edited content would not be aired again in its current form across any BBC platforms.
In response to a letter from President Trump’s legal team, the BBC’s lawyers and BBC Chair Samir Shah personally conveyed apologies for the edit of the President’s speech featured in the program. The BBC clarified that there are no intentions to re-air the documentary ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ on any BBC platforms. Despite expressing regret for the editing mistake, the BBC refuted any grounds for a defamation claim.
President Trump had threatened a billion-dollar lawsuit over the edited content, but BBC leaders opted not to engage in a public dispute with him. Trump, in an interview with Fox News, emphasized his commitment to pursuing legal action, citing the dishonest editing of the content by the BBC. However, legal experts raised doubts about the likelihood of Trump succeeding in a lawsuit, particularly as the Panorama episode was not accessible in Florida where the legal action was initiated.
Trump faced widespread criticism for his response to the Capitol riot, during which his supporters breached the building while the 2020 Presidential Election results were being certified.
