“Birmingham Schools Close Early for High-Risk Europa League Match”

Date:

Several schools in Birmingham will be closing early in anticipation of the Aston Villa versus Maccabi Tel Aviv match. The Europa League fixture at Villa Park tonight has been labeled as “high risk” by West Midlands Police after a comprehensive evaluation based on previous incidents. Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters were prohibited from attending the game last month due to safety worries, sparking criticism from various politicians, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Five protest groups representing both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli factions are expected to gather this evening, accompanied by approximately 700 police officers to ensure the safety of football enthusiasts and locals.

Anticipated demonstrations come amid escalating international condemnation of Israel for the rising death toll in Gaza. Pressure has mounted on UEFA and FIFA to exclude Israel’s national teams and clubs from international tournaments, with UN advisory experts advocating for sporting sanctions following a UN inquiry accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Despite the extensive police presence, Birmingham schools are preparing to close early. Mansfield Green E-ACT Primary Academy, situated just over half a mile from Villa Park, will dismiss students at 2 pm instead of the usual 3:15 pm closing time. In a message to parents, the school explained the early closure due to the match.

Another school reportedly closing early is BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy, with plans to shut at 1:15 pm. The principal informed parents via email about the early closure due to anticipated protests in the area.

Former Labour MP Lord Ian Austin criticized the decision to close schools early, emphasizing the importance of enhancing education in the community instead of escalating tensions. A spokesperson for E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy stated the early closure was advised by local authorities to mitigate potential disruptions, with other schools in the vicinity taking similar precautions.

Parents and caregivers were thanked for their understanding and cooperation in light of the early closures.
