A tragic incident occurred when a 34-year-old man, who had recently lost his job as a customer service representative, took on a temporary position at a supermarket in New York. Jdimytai Damour, seeking to earn money for his expenses and education, met an untimely death while working on Black Friday in 2008. The chaos of over 2,000 eager shoppers storming into the Walmart at Green Acres Mall resulted in Damour being trampled to death, with others also being injured in the frenzy.
Damour, a former Freeport High School graduate with a passion for literature and poetry, aspired to become a teacher. His father described him as a kind-hearted individual. The tragic incident led to Damour being rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to asphyxiation caused by the pressure on his chest from the crowd.
Following the event, reports suggested that Walmart lacked sufficient security measures to handle the large crowd. The supermarket expressed regret over the incident, despite taking precautions such as adding security personnel and working closely with the local police. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 called for an investigation into Damour’s death, criticizing the lack of safety barriers and management oversight that could have prevented the tragedy.
