Thousands of households facing financial difficulties may qualify for up to £1,700 in energy assistance from British Gas, regardless of whether they are customers or not. The British Gas Energy Trust has reopened its Individual and Families Fund to support both pre-payment and credit households dealing with energy debt ranging from £50 to £1,700 for pre-payment customers and £250 to £1,700 for credit customers.
To be eligible for the assistance, households must have a total income below £18,723 or reside with a disabled individual receiving disability benefits, a Carers Allowance recipient, or be part of a household with three or more children.
If you believe you meet the eligibility criteria, it is recommended to seek advice from organizations like Citizens Advice before applying for the fund. Applicants who have previously received assistance from their energy supplier or the British Gas Energy Trust within the past two years may not be eligible.
Jessica Taplin, the head of the British Gas Energy Trust, expressed satisfaction in relaunching the Individuals and Families Fund to aid both credit and prepayment meter account holders, emphasizing the importance of supporting households grappling with high energy costs and financial challenges. The fund aims to provide essential assistance to those in need to ensure warmth and safety within their homes.
The announcement comes as energy bills have recently increased, with the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual fuel household on direct debit rising to £1,755. This price cap will remain in effect until December 31, covering those on standard variable rate tariffs. However, the cap does not restrict the total energy costs, which are determined by actual consumption levels.
The Ofgem price cap sets limits on gas and electricity unit charges, including fixed standing charges for energy network connection. The cap figure reflects expected annual expenses for households with average energy usage levels. Ofgem estimates the average household consumes 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas over a year.
