The loved ones of a British man who passed away following dental and hair transplant procedures in Turkey have honored him as the beacon of their lives. Mentor Rama, 36, traveled to Istanbul for the treatments but fell ill upon returning to his hotel room. Medical help was called, and he was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died on November 11.
Following his death, Rama’s body was transferred to the Council of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul, prompting a police inquiry into the incident. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) stated that they are assisting Rama’s family and coordinating with local authorities.
A heartfelt message posted on a relative’s public Facebook account expressed profound grief over Rama’s departure, describing him as the source of light, warmth, and strength for the family. Rama’s remains have been repatriated to the UK, as reported by Turkish media. In recent years, Turkey has emerged as a favored destination for Britons seeking cost-effective cosmetic procedures, including dental work.
Notably, the Foreign Office disclosed that 28 British nationals have died in Turkey after elective treatments from March 2019 to March 2024. Turkey’s clinics are recognized for offering attractive “medical tourism packages,” drawing individuals seeking affordable options like “Turkey teeth,” which are substantially cheaper compared to the UK. Despite the cost benefits, concerns have been raised by dentists about potential risks and complications associated with dental procedures in Turkey.
