According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), approximately 639,000 Brits left the UK in 2023, marking a nearly 10% increase since the previous year. Among them is the Masterson family, who made the bold decision to move from Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to a bustling city in Canada.
Jack Masterson, 36, a videographer, and his wife Natalie, 35, embarked on this journey seeking a change of scenery for their children. They found an opportunity through the Canadian Express Entry visa program, which expedited their relocation process due to Natalie’s background as a former NHS nurse. This visa initiative, introduced in 2023, primarily targets healthcare professionals to address shortages in the Canadian healthcare system, attracting a significant number of Brits in recent years.
The Mastersons settled in North Vancouver, a popular area for British expats, where they encountered a vibrant British community referred to affectionately as “limeys.” Despite the cultural adjustments and higher costs of certain goods like bread in Canada, Jack expressed contentment with their move, highlighting the picturesque surroundings, welcoming atmosphere, and outdoor recreational opportunities that have enriched their family life.
Simon Hood, an expert in relocations and Executive Director at John Mason International, emphasized that many Brits are choosing to move to Canada not solely for financial reasons but for the intrinsic values and experiences the country offers. This sentiment reflects a broader trend where individuals prioritize quality of life and unique opportunities when considering international relocations.
