Business Secretary Peter Kyle has accused Nigel Farage of embodying the political ideology of Enoch Powell in today’s context. Speaking at the Co-operative Party conference, the senior Cabinet minister criticized the Reform UK leader.
During his address, Mr. Kyle emphasized the importance of achieving higher and sustained economic growth to restore trust in democracy and good governance. He warned that without economic progress, far-right parties promoting disruption and division, like Reform UK, gain traction.
Referring to Enoch Powell’s controversial 1968 speech, known for the phrase “rivers of blood,” Mr. Kyle linked Farage’s politics to Powell’s divisive rhetoric. This isn’t the first time Mr. Kyle has clashed with Farage, previously challenging him on his opposition to the Online Safety Act.
The Co-operative Party, allied with Labour, also heard from Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who highlighted the need to unite communities against divisive political forces like Reform UK. Reed emphasized the shared interest in fostering successful local communities as a unifying goal.
