A man from Calgary has been taken into custody and formally accused of making threats to harm Prime Minister Mark Carney. Jamie Dacosta, aged 31, is charged with uttering threats. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that their National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) received information in July about a death threat directed at the prime minister on a YouTube channel.
The alleged incident involving Carney took place between July 25 and July 26, 2026, as per court documents. Dacosta had a court appearance via video from the Calgary Remand Centre, where he is currently detained. Apart from the threat charges, he is also facing unrelated allegations, including extortion, three counts of uttering threats, and wearing a disguise with intent, all related to a car business.
During the recent court session, Defense lawyer Adriano Iovinelli mentioned that Dacosta’s bail request was rejected by Justice Clarissa Pearce last week on all charges. Iovinelli requested a follow-up hearing on Friday to decide if the Crown’s specialized prosecution unit would handle all of Dacosta’s legal matters.
