“Calgary Zoo Investigates Grizzly Bear Escape”

Date:

The Calgary Zoo, operated by the Wilder Institute, is currently investigating how a grizzly bear managed to escape its enclosure on Sunday morning. The zoo’s director of animal care, health, and welfare mentioned during a media briefing on Monday that they are conducting a thorough review to identify necessary improvements to the habitat and implement mitigation measures.

The bear, named Fitz and a one-year-old rescued grizzly bear cub, was discovered outside its designated area by staff during routine morning checks before the zoo opened to the public. Swift action was taken by the animal care team to tranquilize Fitz, who is reported to be in good health.

Colleen Baird, the director of animal care, health, and welfare, assured the public that there was no safety threat as the incident occurred before the zoo was open to visitors, and Fitz remained near his enclosure. The Wild Canada area, where the bears are housed, was temporarily closed but later reopened.

Authorities from the Calgary Police responded to the situation, remaining on standby. Staff Sgt. John Guigon mentioned that although the situation with a grizzly bear could be potentially risky, Fitz seemed more interested in exploring than causing harm.

It remains unclear when Fitz escaped and for how long he was outside the enclosure. Zoo officials believe he managed to climb over the enclosure’s containment barriers, which are eight to 10 feet high with hot wire, allowing him access to an area outside his habitat.

Baird emphasized that the zoo has multiple layers of security measures in place, and Fitz had to overcome significant obstacles to escape. The entire zoo is enclosed by a high barbed wire fence to prevent animals from getting loose.

Fitz and his brother Turner have been temporarily relocated to a secure area within the zoo while additional assessments are being made to enhance habitat security based on the review findings. The grizzly bear siblings were brought to the zoo as cubs after their mother was killed in self-defense by a hunter near Diamond Valley last fall.
