Canada’s male and female teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships in Germany. Despite a 37-28 loss to Japan, the men finished second in their group with a 2-1 record. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal from the tournament, Canada was awarded a win. Japan’s Take Taniguchi threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s Michael O’Connor threw three TD passes. The men will face American Samoa in the quarterfinals after their victory over the top-ranked U.S.
On the other hand, the women secured the top spot in their group with a perfect 3-0 record following a 34-20 win against Japan. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a chance to advance to the semifinals against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker contributed four touchdown passes, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau also scored for Canada, leading to a comeback victory after being down 20-13 at halftime.
In addition to competing for the world title, teams are vying for a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers in the championships will secure Olympic berths as flag football makes its debut in the Olympic program.
