The Government of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador, and NordSpace have jointly invested $10 million into the establishment of a commercial spaceport on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland. NordSpace, an aerospace company based in Ontario, is developing the Atlantic Spaceport Complex in St. Lawrence with the goal of becoming Canada’s first operational orbital spaceport.
NordSpace confirmed that the federal government is providing $1 million through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program. Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing a total of $4 million, comprising a $1 million term loan and a $3 million forgivable loan tied to the creation of 100 full-time, permanent jobs by 2033. NordSpace is adding $5 million to the project.
CEO Rahul Goel of NordSpace emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating it is about establishing Canada’s leadership in space by launching Canadian vehicles from Canadian soil with Canadian payloads. The company faced technical and logistical challenges last year when attempting to launch its suborbital rocket but is now gearing up for another launch pending authorization.
Sean Fraser, the federal minister overseeing ACOA, stressed the importance of investing in space exploration, highlighting the increasing global emphasis on space capabilities. This development follows the introduction of the Canadian Space Launch Act in the House of Commons to regulate space launch and re-entry activities in Canada, aiming to reduce the country’s reliance on other nations for space missions.
Fraser noted that NordSpace’s project will enhance Canada’s launch capabilities, promote private investment in Newfoundland and Labrador, and generate employment opportunities. Lin Paddock, N.L.’s Minister of Jobs, Growth, and Rural Development, praised the spaceport’s potential to diversify the province’s economy and bolster its role in the global space industry.
The Atlantic Spaceport Complex is expected to contribute to Canada’s space industry growth and strengthen the region’s standing in the global space sector.
