“Canada & Ukraine Ink 100-Year Defense Pact, Ramp Up Drone Production”

Date:

Canada and Ukraine solidified their partnership on Thursday by signing a long-term strategic and political agreement aimed at bolstering both countries’ defense capabilities, including the production of millions of drones. The declaration establishes a 100-year partnership covering defense, security, trade, investment, energy, and critical minerals, with detailed plans to be finalized in the coming months.

The collaboration kicked off with agreements involving drone production and defense industry investments. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the critical juncture in Ukraine’s conflict, noting the advancement of unmanned systems penetrating deep into Russia. He expressed concern over the impact of Russia’s intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, particularly in Kyiv.

Carney reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine during a joint appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, underscoring shared values of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. Canada plans to establish a drone marketplace to facilitate efficient procurement by military units, aiming to ramp up drone production significantly within two years.

Canada has allocated contracts worth up to $50 million to expand its drone fleet by tenfold, focusing on intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance drones, and uncrewed ground vehicles. Collaborations between Canadian and Ukrainian companies are set to enhance drone development capabilities.

General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada and Green Tech Harvest from Ukraine will collaborate on drone technology. Additionally, a partnership between Airlogix LLC and Sentinel Research & Development demonstrates the commitment to joint production of unmanned systems and advanced technologies.

Furthermore, Canada and Ukraine are set to collaborate on producing uncrewed systems, counter-drone technologies, munitions, and artificial intelligence. Zelenskyy praised the agreement as pivotal for Ukrainians’ future and expressed gratitude for Canada’s support.

As drone technology rapidly evolves, Canada faces challenges in keeping pace with Ukraine’s advancements. The Canadian military is strategically evaluating drone deployment considering the swift evolution of technology and tactics on the battlefield.

Canada also pledged financial support for Ukraine’s defense and security, including investments in air defense interceptors, energy infrastructure, and rehabilitation programs for Ukrainian veterans and their families. The partnership signifies a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing defense capabilities for both nations.
