“Canada World Cup Star Eustaquio Joins Swansea City”

Date:

Stephen Eustaquio swiftly accepted the offer to join Swansea City, following Canada’s successful World Cup campaign. The midfielder, fresh from aiding Canada in reaching the tournament’s knockout stage for the first time, was enticed by the opportunity to assist the Welsh club in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League. Additionally, the chance to reunite with familiar coach Vitor Matos, who previously worked at Porto, played a significant role in Eustaquio’s decision.

Swansea City officially confirmed the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto on a two-year contract with a potential extension for another season. Eustaquio expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “It was almost a no-brainer for me. I know what I’m going to get here, so I’m very happy that I made this decision.”

Despite Swansea’s 11th place finish in the Championship last season, well clear of the promotion playoff spots, Eustaquio acknowledged the challenging road ahead in their quest for Premier League promotion. He emphasized the allure of being part of a club striving to reclaim a spot in the top league, highlighting the potential for a remarkable season ahead.

Originally from Leamington, Ontario, Eustaquio relocated to Portugal during his childhood. Prior to his tenure at Porto, he featured for Portuguese club Chaves and Mexico’s Cruz Azul. With over 150 appearances during his four-and-a-half-year stint at Porto, Eustaquio also had a brief loan spell at Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC earlier this year.

Boasting 61 caps for Canada and representing the nation at the last two World Cups, Eustaquio played a pivotal role in this summer’s tournament. Notably, he netted the decisive goal in Canada’s 1-0 triumph over South Africa in the Round of 32 before Canada’s exit at the hands of Morocco. Eustaquio, who often wore the captain’s armband in Alphonso Davies’ absence due to injury, reflected on the memorable experience of the competition.

Set to wear the No. 46 jersey for Swansea, Eustaquio is poised to potentially make his debut in the upcoming match against Derby County this weekend.
