The senior women’s flag football team of Canada, led by quarterback Sara Parker, secured their fourth world title and a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Parker expressed immense pride in the team’s hard work that culminated in a 27-20 victory over the United States at the International Federation of American Football event in Düsseldorf, Germany.
During a visit to CBC Sports headquarters in Toronto, Parker and Guillaume Béland from the Canadian national senior men’s team reflected on the significance of their achievements for the future of flag football as it approaches its Olympic debut in Los Angeles. Parker, a pivotal figure in the sport at 26, established flag football programs at various educational institutions, including Champlain College Saint Lambert and Concordia University.
Champlain College’s undefeated debut season led to promotion to the top tier, and Parker’s initiatives during the pandemic paved the way for a Quebec-based university flag football league. With the Olympics on the horizon, Parker emphasized the growth potential for the sport, inspiring young athletes to aspire to Olympic participation.
Following their victories, both Parker and Béland are determined to focus on further team development and aiming for Olympic medals. Parker, recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her exceptional performance, expressed overwhelming happiness and pride in inspiring young athletes through her journey.
Béland, a key player for the Canadian men’s team, made a game-saving interception against Mexico, securing a bronze medal and Olympic qualification. Reflecting on the emotional moment, Béland described it as the “most awesome moment” of his life, highlighting the team’s resilience and passion for the sport.
Despite the transition from tackle football to flag football, Béland acknowledged the adjustment period but emphasized the similarities in skills required for both disciplines. Looking ahead, the Canadian players plan to return to their local leagues, participate in national team training camps, and serve as ambassadors for the sport on the international stage.
As the sport continues to gain momentum, both Parker and Béland envision Canada setting the standard for flag football globally, inspiring future generations of athletes to pursue excellence in the sport.
