Summer McIntosh, a Canadian swimming sensation, has set her sights on a remarkable goal at the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles after achieving significant success in recent years. With three individual gold medals at the 2024 Olympic Games and four golds at last year’s world championships, McIntosh aims to match Michael Phelps’ feat of winning five solo gold medals in a single Games.
During a recent flight to southern California, McIntosh was inspired when she saw SoFi Stadium, the venue that will transform into the largest swimming arena in Olympic history for the 2028 Games. Excited about her prospects, McIntosh expressed her aspirations for the upcoming event.
Currently, McIntosh is in Irvine, California, preparing for the Pan Pacific championships, an event that features top swimming nations like Australia, the United States, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, China, and Canada. The competition, which occurs every four years, commenced with open-water events in Long Beach and will progress to pool events in Irvine, where McIntosh will lead a team of 42 Canadian swimmers.
Despite her potential to compete in multiple events, McIntosh opted to focus on four key races at the Pan Pacs, strategically aligning with her training schedule and event specialties. With her eyes set on the 2028 Olympics, McIntosh aims to showcase her skills and determination in her quest for more swimming accolades.
The Pan Pacific championships will feature intense rivalries and stellar performances from international stars, including McIntosh facing off against American champion Katie Ledecky in the 400m freestyle event. Viewers can catch all the action live on the CBC Gem streaming app and CBC Sports website, with morning heats starting at 1 p.m. ET and finals at 10 p.m. ET each day.
