On a dark Saturday evening in late August, following an exhibition game against the Miramichi Timberwolves, the Chaleur Lightning hockey team was on their way back to Bathurst when a startling incident occurred. Assistant coach Alex Ouellet recounted the moment when the team bus collided with a moose on the highway, causing a loud bang. Fortunately, everyone on board, including the team and coaches, emerged unharmed, except for the driver who sustained minor scratches.
The encounter with the moose left a lasting impression on Ouellet and the team, similar to many other New Brunswickers who have faced such incidents with large animals. The province announced the addition of two new wildlife crossings on the same highway where the collision took place that week.
In an effort to prevent wildlife-related accidents, the province employs various strategies such as wildlife fencing and crossings. Transportation Minister Chuck Chiasson explained that the placement of these measures is determined by analyzing collision data gathered by law enforcement to identify high-risk areas. Currently, 331 kilometers of New Brunswick highways are lined with wildlife fencing on both sides.
To provide safe passage for animals, 82 wildlife crossings, including concrete tunnels, are distributed across New Brunswick. These tunnels, some of which are over four meters tall and wide, are designed to allow animals to move freely without disturbing their natural habitat. Wildlife ecologist Graham Forbes, who conducted research on wildlife tunnels, noted that various animals, not just large mammals like moose, utilize these passages.
Despite the implementation of wildlife tunnels, the Department of Transportation has not observed a significant decrease in collisions. Chiasson emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, including clearing brush for better visibility. Ouellet expressed hope for additional fencing in the area but acknowledged the challenges of preventing every collision, emphasizing the need for proactive safety measures.
