“Chaos in Kent Council Endangers Public Safety”

Date:

Chaos within the Reform-run Kent council poses a significant risk to public safety, cautioned the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). Despite winning a majority in May, Reform UK has suspended nine councillors, including key fire authority members, leaving Kent’s fire and rescue service Chief Executive with limited spending authority. The FBU criticized the situation as a danger to public safety, referring to council leader Linden Kemkaran as “captain chaos.”

Local union representatives sought a meeting with the council leader to address concerns but received no response. Recent tensions escalated after Ms. Kemkaran controversially told dissenting Reform UK colleagues to accept her decisions or “suck it up,” resulting in the suspension of four councillors. FBU’s General Secretary, Steve Wright, emphasized the critical impact on public safety due to the breakdown in governance structures within Kent.

Joe Weir, FBU executive council member for the South East, highlighted the essential role of Kent firefighters and the need for effective political leadership. The FBU expressed disappointment in the lack of attention and responsiveness from the council administration under Reform UK’s leadership. A canceled committee meeting, affecting families requiring school transport, underscored the disruptive consequences of the ongoing turmoil within Kent County Council.

The FBU vowed to prioritize the safety of firefighters and the public amidst the governance challenges. Kent, as one of the largest county councils in Britain with a significant annual budget, faces mounting issues amid the council’s current leadership. Ms. Kemkaran was contacted for a response but did not provide comments.
