Civil Rights Icon Jesse Jackson Hospitalized in Chicago

Date:

Civil rights icon Reverend Jesse Jackson has been hospitalized suddenly, according to his family. The 84-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Wednesday evening. The Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organization he established, has released a statement updating the public on his health status.

“He has been managing a neurodegenerative condition for over a decade,” the organization stated. “Initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, his PSP condition was confirmed last April. The family is grateful for all the prayers during this time.”

Having dedicated over 60 years to advocating for racial equality and economic justice, the American leader revealed his struggle with Parkinson’s in 2018. Inspired by his close friend, boxer Muhammad Ali, who succumbed to the disease in 2016, Reverend Jackson shared his challenges with the progressive neurological condition.

The Baptist minister, who worked alongside the esteemed Martin Luther King Jr, transitioned to a distinguished political career. “This condition affects movement, particularly in the feet. Simple tasks like putting on a shirt can become challenging sometimes,” he explained. “Maintaining independence is crucial. Staying active is key, with boxing being a recommended activity.”

Recounting his boxing experiences in LA, Reverend Jackson expressed his commitment to resuming the sport despite recent interruptions. Former US President Bill Clinton honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000, recognizing his remarkable civil rights activism. Additionally, the revered campaigner has received over 40 honorary doctoral degrees for his unwavering dedication to social justice causes.
