“Comedians Struggle as SiriusXM Shift Favors Celebrities”

Date:

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant decrease in her earnings, a situation that resonates with many others in the industry. SiriusXM made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which used to showcase over 800 comedians on rotation, and instead introduced a new channel owned by well-known comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This move has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a vital source of income and visibility, as the new channel now predominantly features established celebrity comics. Miele expressed how crucial SiriusXM was for her financial stability last year, highlighting the impact on fellow comedians facing personal challenges like caring for sick family members or going on maternity leave.

Although Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to provide opportunities for comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup reveals contrasting statistics. The previous Raw Comedy channel regularly featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 US for every play of their material. However, the rebranded channel showcased only 275 comedians in the past month, with the top 50 artists receiving over 75% of the plays, including renowned figures like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

Miele, who was once among the top performers on the channel, described the shift as a concentration of wealth, emphasizing how it has transitioned from a diverse group of comedians earning decent incomes to a select few making substantial profits, despite not needing the financial support.

Furthermore, Toronto comedian Danish Anwar disclosed a significant drop in his royalties due to the channel change, affecting many Canadian comics who rely on these earnings for their work visas in the U.S. Anwar highlighted the impact on those who invested time and resources into creating comedy albums that are no longer featured on the platform.

While various high-profile comedians have urged Maniscalco to provide opportunities for emerging talents on the channel, he clarified that the decision to end Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement. Despite this, SiriusXM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting comedians at all career stages through the new channel.

Ultimately, the upheaval caused by the channel switch has left many comedians in a precarious financial position, prompting calls for unity and advocacy within the industry to address issues of fair pay and treatment. The situation underscores the challenges faced by comedians reliant on platforms like SiriusXM for exposure and income.
